It's going to look messy, crazy and chaotic. That's ok!
We are about to start our 10th year homeschooling. I just can’t believe it. Time has really flown. My oldest will be in 8th grade but doing some high school work as well. I will have a 6/7th grader, a 5th grader and a 3rd grader. I do not call myself an expert, but I have learned a few things. One thing I have learned is to plan in pencil.
What I mean by that is, it is not going to look exactly the way you planned it to look. We must learn to adjust. We must be good at rolling with the punches. There are days you will wish you had more kids because school is going smooth and you are winning this mom/teacher thing. The kids are getting along, there is no whining about school, and lessons are getting done. Ah, what a win. Then there are days you will want to pull your hair out or threaten to take you children to the nearest school and drop them off.
When you have those days, remember this, YOU ARE NOT A FAILURE.
It’s just one of those days.
There are 5 of us left at home when my husband goes to work. Chances are, someone will wake up on the wrong side of the bed. Kids have bad days too. Those are the days it's ok to close the schoolbook and teach life lessons. Teach your child how to overcome those days when emotions are running high.
Homeschooling isn’t all about academics. It’s about perseverance too. Teaching character and giving them the gift of morality is really important.
It’s going to look messy, crazy and chaotic at times. You mom get to steer the ship. If it’s character, adjust it properly. If it’s the schoolwork and they just aren’t getting it, find something new. But don’t give up altogether. Even the most experienced homeschool mom has those days. In fact, we’ve had more than the new to homeschool mom. The only difference is, we’ve learned to roll with them. Most of us had to figure it out on our own. Some of us had other veteran homeschool mommas to learn from.
Momma, it’s going to be ok. So, as you finish planning out your year or already getting started with your school year, don’t lose heart when things don’t go as planned. Keep going. It’s ok if you don’t get everything done that day. It’s ok if all you do with your littles is read to them and play with play-doh. It’s ok if your oldest is struggling with writing. There is always tomorrow.
